a little over a year ago in partnership with local concert promoter RICK RISPOLI, DEER GOD conceived of and created an interactive HALLOWEEN experience at the the KREISCHER MANSION called CANNIBAL HOUSE. looking back with some clarity on the situation, in many ways the whole thing was a labor of love and marks the first time we really had our extended core of friends (MAGIE of DOLLTITS, KRISTIN from MAKERPARKRADIO.NYC, local composer/musician SKYE DOMINO) involved in a single collaborative project. for me that was the value of the experience, not the bullshit that came with pulling of an event of that size which i have no interest in repeating.
the premise of CANNIBAL HOUSE was that participants would be given a tour of the mansion that has gone horribly wrong. a knowledgeable host meets you at the door and gives some background on the history of the mansion and original owner BALTHAZAR KREISCHER, when a fellow guest is snatched from the group and all hell breaks out. the house is actually a trap. throw in some torture, menstrual blood, chainsaws, a chicken coop with small children and you had the makings of an on-point, completely demented HALLOWEEN for the ages.
i played that host and i felt the irony of being the only non-performer having the most public role in an three day public event. i hated it. i am by no means someone who craves attention, much preferring being in the background, but necessity dictated i pull it off. so i did. what amazed me was just how obnoxious and demeaning many of the guests were. i'll spare details but STATEN ISLAND truly did live up to its reputation. this resulted in my "character" becoming more and more aggressive as the three days moved forward. due to unforeseen high demand we were at this for 5-6 hours nonstop. it became a grind, in many ways a fun grind when people got creeped-out with extreme frightened reactions, but a grind nonetheless. i doubt there will be a next time, but i'd definitely hire actors.
check out the promo and in-attraction "surveillance footage" below, the making-of which was my favorite part of the whole event and i still think holds up a year later.
rounding off our series highlighting members of the DEER GOD TEAM is our consulting manager and frequent collaborator, MAGIE SERPICA. originally from BROOKLYN, she has been a staple of the arts, business and advocacy communities in STATEN ISLAND for years now.
her interests are wide-ranging, as he is a talented visual artist and musician, as seen in her work with fellow SHAOLIN native THERINA BELLA in their acoustic, riot grrrl outfit DOLLTITS. a TATTOO ARTIST by trade, MAGIE was recently voted STATEN ISLAND's "best tattoo artist" by local paper SI ADVANCE and has recently opened her new THE BLACK LODGE TATTOO shop.
i have a hard time keeping up with her whereabouts and activities, as she is constantly planning ART INSTALLATIONS and providing painting/drawing classes in association with PROJECTIVITY, but your best bet is to follow her instagram linked here, as well as listen to her weekly MAKERPARKRADIO.NYC radio show with co-host JEN GALLO called MAKE HER SPACE where they interview (mostly) female guests from the local arts and social justice communities in STATEN ISLAND and beyond.
us here at DEER GOD are happy to be involved with her and look forward to continue to collaborate with her on future projects.

recording engineer ERIC GORMAN is our mastering dude going back to the days at the former [the end] studio in greenpoint. currently he works and resides in LOS ANGELES and has an extensive client list including the likes of blondie, dead prez, the breeders, herbie hancock, bun b, shakey graves, au revoir simone, twin shadow and dj green lantern among many others.
arguably the most invaluable member of the DEER GOD TEAM is our tech guru NACHO. this osaka native, along with BRIAN, LJ and LOGAN, worked at the former [the end] studio as the in-house tech for all repairs and modifications. arguably the latter was where he really shined as his rich diagnostic understandings of circuits allowed him the ability to heavily modify pedals, outboard gear and instruments for past clients of that studio, including the likes of UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA, LIAM FINN, YEASAYER, JUSTYN PILBROW, MIKE SAPONE and ERIC KRASNO.
currently he is in development of several secret products i wouldn't dare reveal here, just suffice to say that we all value his work and feel lucky that he is a part of our team.
this week we are focusing on LOGAN, DEER GOD recording engineer and 1/2 of the indie dance-pop group ACE & THE MIGHTY GAN. after the lease expired on [the end] recording studio in greenpoint a few years ago, many of the engineers came out to staten island with BRIAN to setup a new studio in the historic KREISCHER MANSION. during this formative period (DEER GOD wasn't founded until a year and a bit later) LOGAN was instrumental in reestablishing the new location and maintaining the sprawling estate. he even began growing arugula and lettuce on the premise, that is until the deer reclaimed their territory and ate everything.
LOGAN has worked closely with in recent years with artists like chilean musician GO and YEASAYER. he is known for vocal abilities and propensity for stacking vocals in a mix, which is a tricky thing to do (so i've been told since i am not a recording engineer).
he is also a talented musician that i have seen play several gigs around NYC. he was nice enough to serve as our guinea pig when we were figuring out how to go about filming our KREISCHER MANSION SESSIONS live music series. below is our first, and ultimately unpublished, episode taken from the widow's walk on the top floor of the mansion. enjoy.

ok i admit that its more than a little strange to write a profile on yourself. but here i go.
as creative director of DEER GOD i basically have a hand in everything we do that is non-audio. that basically boils down controlling/editing all things visual and written. of course we work as a team and frequently collaborate and take cues from one another, but i more or less take these efforts and produce the final product.
out of the whole team i am probably the last to the party in that i was not involved with audio or video production until a few years ago when i returned from overseas. for the better part of the last decade i was involved with education having taught secondary english abroad at international schools in MYANMAR, JAPAN, VENEZUELA as well as a stint as a peace corps volunteer in ALBANIA. my start as an educator was in NYC where i got my masters at COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY and had brief stints teaching at both BROOKLYN TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL (student teacher) and STUYVESANT HIGH SCHOOL (long-term substitute). my bad timing entering the field in the wake of the great recession meant that no new positions were available as older teachers delayed retirement and an effective freeze was put on new hires. thus i had an IVY LEAGUE degree and recommendations from two of the top public high schools in the nation, but no prospects.
so i went and taught overseas.
due to my parents work i spent time overseas growing up in NIGERIA (middle school) and KUWAIT (junior year of high school) and attended high school in both MASSACHUSETTS (NORTHFIELD MOUNT HERMON) and CALIFORNIA (ROCKLIN HIGH SCHOOL). oh yeah, and i was born in SPAIN.
my passion as long as i can remember photography as i would take photos of my travels (somehere around 60+ countries). i think my passion for other cultures and worldviews informed my (brief) teaching career and most definitely is a part of what i bring to my current visual work here at DEER GOD. if interested, check out my photos above.
the rest are linked HERE.
my cousin and business partner BRIAN is the heartbeat and propulsive force behind DEER GOD and all the creative work we do. he's an excellent audio engineer having worked with and collaborating with an impressive roster of artists including TALIB KWELI, YEASAYER, CLAMS CASINO, ERIC KRASNO, PHAROAHE MONCH, DIRTY PROJECTORS, HOLY GHOST!, NICHOLAS JAAR, LIAM FINN and others during his tenure as co-owner and founder of the former [the end] recording studio in greenpoint.
since forming DEER GOD and being our MUSIC DIRECTOR, he has helped direct our efforts in a more visual-centered direction as we need noticed most live-recordings posted by companies and bands on YouTube have unmixed sound that is pretty god awful. our company has perfected the art of being an all-inclusive live video production team that can handle film and recording a set in virtually any situation.
check out his recent mixing work in these live performance videos we produced over the past year. the 3D sound is quite stunning. you'd never know by some of the less-than-ideal recording conditions. dude is a wizard.
seems only fitting that we start with LJ AVALOS to kick off our DEER GOD TEAM profiles over the coming weeks. the man is a beast and is the heart and soul of our company. not only is he a proven audio engineer and beat-maker that proved his worth at the late [the end] recording studio in greenpoint where he collaborated with THE LONDON SOULS and PHAROAHE MONCH among other notable artists, the dude is also a gifted camera-operator, having his fingerprint on virtually every DEER GOD and 8 MARKS related video. 8 MARKS is an affiliate production team consisting of LJ and his brother Antonio, who is a wizard of an editor.
here are some examples from DEER GOD:
and 8 MARKS:
if you are interested in his services, definitely hit him up at his IG or write us here at DEER GOD. we do music videos, corporate promotions, web series, etc. anything you need. HIT US UP.
