not gonna lie, when i started watching the documentary LAST DAYS HERE (9.14 PICTURES, 2012) about the rehabilitation of DOOM METAL legend BOBBY LIEBLING of PENTAGRAM, i almost felt implicated in incentivizing of the documentation of somebody's PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL and PSYCHOLOGICAL DESTRUCTION.
the dude lived a hard life full of DISAPPOINTMENT and mental ANGUISH that was not helped by a decades-long DRUG ADDICTION to everything from crack cocaine to various opiates. the toll said DRUG ABUSE did to his body is rather profound, with GROTESQUE open soars up and down his body. at the depths of the DEPRAVITY filmed the man was psychosomatically convinced of being consumed by parasites. it was just SAD.
the film follows his manager and friend (and arguably his enabler) SEAN PELLETIER who seeks to revitalize LIEBLING's career and get him back onstage again. in the late 2000s there was a swell of interest from the public in 1970s DOOM METAL thanks to like-minded upstart STONER and SLUDGE METAL groups that gained popularity during this period, namely HIGH ON FIRE, DOWN, MASTODON, EYEHATEGOD and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE among others. whats interesting about PELLETIER is that it is hard to discern his true intentions throughout the film and whether or not here is a benevolent influence. in essence, is he helping or EXPLOITING LIEBLING? the singer was in BAD SHAPE and had spent decades cocooned in his parents MARYLAND basement, wasting away in ISOLATION. the immeasurable toll on his parents who obviously love him is almost too much to bear at times as a viewer. its just PAINFUL to watch.
the fact that the dude pulls of a comeback, plays shows and even gets married proves that there is hope out there for everyone, i guess. but i dont know. if your singular motivation to get up in the morning is to be adored and admired by others then i have my doubts. doesnt feel particularly sustainable. at all. LAST DAYS HERE is a unique film that feels like a cross between ANVIL!: THE STORY OF ANVIL (ABRAMORAMA, 2008) and SOME KIND OF MONSTER (review linked HERE). definitely worth watching for fans of the DOOM METAL genre, but also comeback narratives in general

HOODED MEANCE is just a good ol' DEATH-DOOM group out of FINLAND. DEATH-DOOM combines DEATH METAL with DOOM METAL, but all you need to know is that you turn this band on and just zone out in full-on, conked-out METAL bliss. this has to be what people listen to when burning down churches. got that "church burning" vibe for sure.
go ahead, check them out. you're welcome.
one of my regrets from my time living in JAPAN a few years ago was never getting to see the experimental SLUDGE METAL band BORIS in concert. i think they may have played at some point right when i arrived and i was still adjusting to my new living situation. oh well. my plan was always to stick around for a few years but that didn't happen.
BORIS is a sonically adventurous three piece outfit from TOKYO that doesn't conform to any common sense of song structure or keep to any regular tempo. their songs are more likened to an extended walk in the woods where you eventually come back to some semblance of civilization but in the meantime you are hopelessly and blissfully lost and at the mercy of your surroundings. to my ears their music is always unfamiliar in a good way, like listening to ORNETTE COLEMAN or FREE JAZZ. you are definitely taken along for an unexpected ride, but you are in good hands.
they are most definitely worth checking out.

i hate SACRAMENTO.
thats not a secret to most people who know me. i moved there abruptly my senior year of high school in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 from all places, KUWAIT. looking back i appreciate the sacrifice my uncle and aunt took in bringing me in without much notice and did their best with a moody, intransigent teenager.
that being said, SACRAMENTO objectively did suck. the jingoistic, right-wing, muslim-baiting horseshit i had to deal with daily by the kids out there (and some teachers) was a test of patience on my part. one of the unfortunate things about living abroad that most people don't realize is coming home and having to smile and listen to people talk about things they know nothing of. you just have to sit and take it. thats it. its unavoidable and completely isolating.
so its been my longstanding belief that nothing good ever came out of SACRAMENTO, with the exceptions being DEFTONES and DEATH GRIPS. well, a few years ago i added CHELSEA WOLFE to that list.
holt shit is she the real deal. her music is a viscerally affecting amalgam of FOLK, POST-PUNK, DOOM METAL and GOTH rock. had i only known that someone my age from neighboring ROSEVILLE was gonna create such potent material years on i might've been a little nicer back then.
