part of the same 1990s GLASWEGIAN INDIE POP scene that brought the world BELLE & SEBASTIAN, there is something both UPLIFTING and uniquely TRAGIC about the voice of singer TRACYANNE CAMPBELL that makes CAMERA OBSCURA a SINGULAR POP phenomena. its that same SWEET-AND-SOUR dynamic that makes listening to tracks like "HE HIT ME (IT FELT LIKE A KISS)" by THE CRYSTALS, "GIRLFRIEND IN A COMA" by THE SMITHS, "HEY YA" by OUTKAST, "EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE" by THE POLICE or "HELP" by THE BEATLES so compelling.
im practically obsessed with HOOK-LADEN POP music that is SUBVERSIVE upon repeat listens and moments of self-reflection. that level of songwriting is not common and im constantly asking myself when bobbing my head to a CAMERA OBSCURA track whether this ANTHEMIC track is building me up or letting me become EMOTIONAL for a long fall. maybe that is the sound of falling in love. dont know. if anything, it makes CAMERA OBSCURA something well worth checking out.
